PAST CRIMESIn this book, crimes and punishments will be described for many periods.
Some very famous crimes have been left out, just because there are so many
books already published about them. Some periods have more archaeological
evidence than historical, while in later times, the opposite is true. In each case,
however, an attempt has been made to place the crime or punishment in the
context of its period in history and to give an overview of the development of
the ways in which crimes were committed, detected, and punished from the
stone ages to the beginning of the twentieth century.
