The County Board of
Commissioners meeting on Nov.
7 included proclamations honor-
ing two events: Red Ribbon Week
and Operation Green Light for
Veterans. The nation’s oldest drug
prevention awareness program, Red
Ribbon Week, is celebrated annually
Oct. 23-31, encouraging everyone to
participate in drug prevention educa-
tion activities all year long, making a
visible statement that we are commit-
ted to keeping our kids healthy and
drug-free. Operation Green Light for
Veterans is an initiative sponsored by
the National Association of Counties
that encourages us to recognize the
importance of honoring all veterans
who made immeasurable sacrifices to
preserve our freedom by displaying
green lights within and on exteriors
of buildings Nov. 4-11.
In new business, the Board of
Commissioners voted to choose
for 2025 the exemption option
Calhoun County Board of Commissioners update
within the Publicly Funded Health
Care Insurance Contribution Act
of 2011 (PA152), approved a five-
year contract with VitalCore Health
Strategies (VCHS) to provide inmate
health services for the Calhoun
County Correctional Facility,
approved the Michigan Department
of Transportation Contract #24-
5414 for federal aid safety grant
tree removals along T Drive S from
Jackson Rd to M-99, and approved
the TPOAM-Road collective bar-
gaining agreement.
On the Consent Agenda, the Board

Calhoun County Youth Center
Award
Congratulations to our Youth
Center for receiving the USDA’s
Healthy Meals Incentives Rural
Lunch Trailblazer Award for their
efforts to improve school meal nutri-
tion by reducing sodium content!
Through small changes, like switch-
ing to fresh and frozen vegetables,
adjusting condiments, and focusing
on scratch cooking, the Youth Center
has reduced sodium by an average
of 250 mg per meal. As one of only
seven Michigan districts awarded,
CCYC will be recognized nationally
and participate in the Healthy Meals
Summit in Las Vegas next October,
sharing strategies for sustaining high-
quality, nutritious school meals.
United Way Campaign Kick-Off
We’re gearing up for the
2024 United Way Workplace
Campaign during the season of
Thanksgiving. For over 100 years,
United Way has supported Calhoun
County, and thanks to employee
campaigns like ours, that impact
can continue to grow. The County’s
employee contribution campaignruns through Giving Tuesday, Dec.
3 and we are striving to exceed last
year’s total of $18,000 raised.
The Calhoun County Board
of Health met on Oct. 12 and
announced several new staff mem-
bers, including Kailey Roberts as the
new Women’s and Infant Children
(WIC) Supervisor.
Health Department management
also gave an update on the Michigan
Three-Year Accreditation process,
noting that the Health Department is
in the final stages of preparation for
the Michigan Local Public Health
Accreditation Cycle 8, with an on-
site review scheduled for March
2025.
In other news, the MDHHS
recently awarded CCPHD $79,601
to expand Kindergarten Oral Health
Assessments (KOHAs) within
Calhoun County. The CCPHD team
is excited about our partnership with
Grace Health for this initiative
Finally, the Choices Program
Clinic Coordinator presented pro-
gram data and the Fiscal Year 2025
Family Planning Workplan to the
Board of Health, which serves as the
Calhoun County Family Planning
Advisory Council.
Youth Center Angel Tree Initiative
The Youth Center’s Angel Tree
collection is underway again this
year, providing donated gifts for the
children who reside in the Youth
Center over Christmas.
This year, the County is asking for
simple comfort items such as:Sports balls of any sort
Hand-held electronic games
Ankle socks (adult-size; white)
Black hair ties
Hygiene supplies
Detangler spray
New soft pillows
Throw blankets
