Gyõr – Papa – 58 kilometres
The next day, our route took us away from the river and towards the
shimmering waters of Lake Balaton. As it was mid-summer, the
weather was sweltering and humid. However, the warmth and
friendliness of the locals impressed us once again. An elderly
gentleman who didn't speak English must have noticed us suffering in
the intense heat. He quickly invited us inside, offered us some ice
cream, and gave us two slices of smoked meat. His kindness was
heartwarming, and we were deeply grateful for his hospitality.
Fuelled by the ice cream, we made our way to Papa, a historic town
with a charming collection of old buildings. Nowadays, the entire town
centre is a protected area. Papa is also well-known for its thermal
baths, but due to the intense heat, we decided not to visit and
instead enjoyed a cold beer on a shady veranda in the historic part of
town.
