LORD HOWE ISLAND IS ON
EVERYONE'S LIPS RIGHT NOW
Paradise is a much overused word these days, but we
are not exaggerating when we say that Lord Howe
Island is just that, paradise. The UNESCO World
Heritage-listed island is just 700 kilometres
north-west of Sydney, but a world away from the
everyday. Its staggeringly blue waters lap wide
beaches; fish crowd around your feet when you step
into the water; turtles frolic in the shallows; and the
lush, hulking mass of Mount Gower dominates the
horizon, its peak often shrouded in a crown of wispy
white cloud. Like we say, paradise. And everyone on
island is determined to keep it that way; only 400
visitors are allowed at any one time, cars play second
fiddle to bikes (riders wave warmly to each other as
they pass) and – wait for it – there are no mobile
phone towers anywhere. Yeah, we know, paradise!
