Fu-nan had presented musicians to the Wu State of the Six Dynasties.^189
in 243. But that was an isolated case, the interest in foreign music
being much greater during T’ang. The blacks were, of course, curi-
osities to the Chinese.
Elephants had been rare gifts during the Six Dynasties, and rhi-
noceroses even more so. Lin-yi had presented one elephant to the
Eastern Chin in 340 and another in 417, Fu-nan one elephant in 357
to the same dynasty. P’an-p’an had offered one elephant to the Liang
in 551. Fu-nan presented one rhinoceros to the Liang in 539.^190 This
adds up to only four elephants and one rhinoceros to the southern
courts of the Six Dynasties.
In contrast, no less than 122 elephants are recorded to have been
presented to the T’ang and Sung between 618 and 1276. These are
the offering countries arranged in numerical sequence:
Chiao-chih 74 elephants
