The closest relations between Japan and China were during the reign
of Kao-tsung (650-683) of T’ang with seven or almost 1/4 of all
recorded missions. In addition to the missions to China, the texts also
record four missions from Japan to the Khitan/Liao court.
Unfortunately, the sources do not normally enumerate the goods
brought by the Japanese and content themselves by stating that these
were regional objects. The few specified items fall into the following
categories:

Humans

853: Musicians.

Aromatics

Fragrant woods

1072: red sandalwood.

Camphor

655: baroos camphor.
