the imperial seal. It urged the king of Koguryo not to attack Silla.
“You and Paekche must cease hostilities, otherwise I will attack your
country next year” (Chiu T’ang shu 199A:2b, 7b, 11a; Tzu-chih t’ung-chien
p.6204;Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 326:54b, 55b).^8
On Feb.14, 644, the New Year’s Day, Koguryo envoys offered
regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024). On Oct.30 of the same
year, the Herald reported that Koguryo had presented silver (Tzu-
chih t’ung-chien p.6212).
On Jan.17, 645, T’ai-tsung ordered an attack on Koguryo by land
and sea, in which the Chinese were allied with Silla, Paekche, the Hsi,
and the Khitan, and also used auxiliary Turkish troops (Chiu T’ang shu
199A:2b, 8a; Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6215; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 325:50a;
54b). Although the Chinese won some victories in Liao-tung, this war
ended in 647 as inconclusively as the previous ones.
In spite of the war, Koguryo sent envoys in the 1st month (Jan./Feb.)
of 646, probably on the New Year’s Day (Feb.10). They presented
two beautiful women, whom T’ai-tsung rejected (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei
p.5014).
On Jan.30, 648, the New Year’s Day, Koguryo sent envoys with
gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei pp.5024-5025).
After T’ai-tsung had died on July 10, 649, Kao Tsang sent an envoy
to condole (Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 325:50b).
In 651, Emperor Kao-tsung warned Paekche not to attack Koguryo
and Silla (Chiu T’ang shu 199A:8a;Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6277).
On Feb.15, 652, the New Year’s Day, a mission from Koguryo
offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5025; Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6277)
In the 1st month (Feb./Mar.) of 655, Koguryo, Paekche and the
Mo-ho joined forces and attacked Silla. Envoys from the king of Silla
to the T’ang court requested support. In the 2nd month (Mar./Apr.),
T’ang conducted a raid into Koguryo which, in spite of claims to the
contrary, seems to have been a minor one (Chiu T’ang shu 199A:8b;
Tzu-chih t’ung-chien pp.6287-6288; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 326:54b). Another
raid in 658 was equally unsuccessful.
In the 12th month (Dec./Jan., 657) of the Chinese year 656,
envoys from the king of Koguryo, Kao Tsang, presented a letter and

(^8) Chiu T’ang shu and Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao date the attack of Paekche and Koguryo
642, in which case the report from Silla would have been rather late.
