In 727, Silla envoys presented regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei
p.5028).
On Sep.24, 728, envoys from the king of Silla, Chin Hsing-kuang,
offered regional objects. The king also proposed that men from his
state study the classics in China. Emperor Hsüan-tsung accepted this
(Chiu T’ang shu 8:15b; 199A:12a).
On Jan.23, 730, the New Year’s Day, envoys from Silla congratu-
lated. In the 9th month (Oct./Nov.) of the same year, envoys from
Silla offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5028).
In the 2nd month (Mar/Apr.) of 731, Silla envoys congratulated on
the New Year’s Day of 732 (Feb.1) (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5028).
In 732, Hsüan-tsung presented Hsing-kuang one male and one
female white cockatoo, embroidered robes of purple thin silk, embroi-
dered silk in five colours, and other silken fabrics, in all more than 300
pieces, and vessels of gold and silver filigree. In 733, Hsing-kuang’s
nephew Chih-lien arrived with a letter of thanks and presented a paint-
ing of a Long Life Plant (T’ang hui-yao 95:17a).
In 732, Po-hai forces raided Teng^27 on the northern coast of
Shan-tung by sea. At this time, Chin Hsing-kuang’s clan member
Ssu-lan was in the T’ang capital. Emperor Hsüan-tsung appointed
him Supernumerary Grand Coachman and sent him back to Silla to
attack Po-hai from the south in early 733. He also appointed Chin
Hsing-kuang as Commander Unequalled in Honour and Military
Commissioner of the non-existant Army Which Brings Repose to
the Sea. The attack had to be called off because of an unusually cold
winter (Chiu T’ang shu 199A:12a; 199B12b; Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6799;
Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 326:55b).
In the 4th month (May/June) of 734, a high Silla official arrived
at the T’ang court to congratulate on the New Year’s Day of 735
(Jan.29). Subsequently Hsing-kuang sent a first paternal cousin to the
T’ang court, but he died en route in the 11th month (Nov./Dec.) of
