congratulate on the New Year’s Day of 746 (Jan.26). The chief envoy
was given the nominal Chinese office of Supernumerary Chief Clerk
of the Police Patrol Guard Command of the Left and presented with
a green robe and a silver belt (T’ang hui-yao 95:17b; Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei
p.5030).
In the 2nd month (Feb./Mar.) of 746, Silla envoys arrived to con-
gratulate on the New Year’s Day of 747 (Feb.14) and present regional
objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5030).
In 748, the king of Silla presented gold, silver, cotton, court gar-
ments, cow bezoar, human hair, ginseng etc (T’ang hui-yao 95:17b).
In the 8th month (September) of 753, and in the 9th month (Sep./
Oct.) of 762, Silla envoys were received at the court (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei
p.5031).
In 763, envoys from Chin Hsien-ying offered presents. The chief
envoy was given the nominal Chinese title of Master of Writing of the
Ministry of Rites. In the 3rd month (Apr./May) of 766, Silla envoys
brought gifts (T’ang hui-yao 95:17b; Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5031).
In 767, it became known at the T’ang court that Chin Hsien-ying
had died and been succeeded by his son Ch’ien-yün (Hyegong Wang).
He dispatched a mission that year with a letter and regional objects
and requested recognition. In the 2nd month (Feb./Mar.) of 768,
Emperor Su-tsung sent a Gentleman-of-the Palace of the Ministry
of Granaries and Concurrent Palace Assistant Secretary to condole
and sacrifice, appoint Chin Ch’ien-yün as Commander Unequalled
in Honour, and recognize him as king of Silla. On Feb.11, the new
king’s mother was entitled Grand Consort. In the 9th month (Oct./
Nov.) of the same year, Silla envoys offered gifts (Chiu T’ang shu 11:
13b; 199A:12b; T’ang hui-yao 95:17b-18a; Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5031;
Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 326:55b).
In the 5th month (June/July) of 772, a Silla envoy arrived to con-
gratulate on the New Year’s Day of 773 (Jan.28). He was received
in audience and appointed to the nominal office of Supernumerary
Junior Commandant of the Guards (Chiu T’ang shu 199A:12b; Ts’e-fu
yüan-kuei p.5031).
In the 4th month (Apr./May) of 773, Silla envoys arrived to con-
gratulate on the New Year’s Day of 774 (Feb.15). They presented
gold, silver, cow bezoar, court garments, silken fabrics etc. In the 6th
month (June/July) of the same year, another mission arrived from
Silla, whose envoys were received in audience (Chiu T’ang shu 199A:
12b;T’ang hui-yao 95:18a; Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5032).
