k’ao 326:56a).
In the 11th month (Dec./Jan., 805) of the Chinese year 804, a mis-
sion arrived from Silla (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5032).
In the 2nd month (Mar./Apr.) of 805, Emperor Shun-tsung sent a
Gentleman-of-the-Palace of the Ministry of Arms to recognize Chin
Chün-yung’s son Chung-hsing (Aejang Wang) as king of Silla. His
mother was entitled Grand Consort and his wife Consort (Chiu T’ang
shu 14:1b; 199A:13a; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 326:56a).
In the 8th month (Sep./Oct.) of 806, Silla envoys offered presents.
In the 11th month (Dec./Jan., 807) of the same Chinese year 806,
a royal Silla prince who had served in the imperial guards returned
home. He was given the nominal title of Probationary Inspector of
the Imperial Library (Chiu T’ang shu 199A:13a; T’ang hui-yao 95:18b;
Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5032
On Feb.8, 807, in 808, and in 809, Silla envoys offered gifts (Chiu
T’ang shu 14:10a, Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5032; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 326:
56a).
In the 10th month (November) of 810, a son of the king of Silla
presented gold and silver, an image of the Buddha, Buddhist sutras,
pennants etc. in memory of Shun-tsung^29 (Chiu T’ang shu 199A:13a;
Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5032).
In 812,^30 Chin Chung-hsin died and was suceeded by his chancel-
lor Chin Yen-sheng (Hondok Wang). In the 4th month (May/June)
of the same year, a mission of 54 men from Chin Yen-sheng arrived
at the T’ang court to congratulate on the New Year’s Day of 813
(Feb.5) and at the same time to announce the death of his predeces-
sor. The envoys were received in audience Chiu T’ang shu 199A:13a;
Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5032; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 326:56a). On Sep.2, 812,^31

(^29) Who had abdicated in 805 and died in 806.
(^30) Chiu T’ang shu says unequivocably that Chung-hsing died in 812. Wen-hsien
t’ung-k’ao states that Chung-hsing died after a reign of seven years. If counted from
the year of China’s recognition (805) this would give 812. Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei agrees
that the death was announced in 812. This conflicts with the Korean chronology as
given by Marcus, Korean Studies Guide, p.181, according to which Chung-hsing died
in 809. But if Chung-hsing had died in 809, Silla would have had opportunity to
announce it in the mission of 810.
(^31) Chiu T’ang shu 15:2a gives the date as 6th month, chi-mou,Chiu T’ang shu 199A:
13a and T’ang hui-yao 95:19a as 7th month without cyclical characters. The 6th month
had no day with the cyclical characters chi-mou, so that 7th month is correct.
