sions were received at the Liao court on Mar.18, 1038, May 6, 1043,
Apr.25 and July 13, 1044, Jan.2, 1045, in the 4th month (Apr./May)
of 1045, and on Apr.25, 1046 (Liao shih 18:7b; 19:4a, 5a, 6a, 6b, 7a,
7b; 70:16b, 17b, 18a; 115:3b).
On Sep.8, 1046, Koryo envoys announced the death of their king
at the Liao court. Wang Hui (Munjong) inherited the throne (Liao shih
19:8a, 115:3b; Sung shih 487:11b).^57
On Jan.10, 1047, May 23, 1048, in the 3rd month (Apr./May) of
1049, and on May 21, 1050, Koryo envoys to the Liao court offered
gifts. In the 6th month (June/July) of 1050, they congratulated Liao
on the victorious campaign against Hsia. On July 3, 1053, and May
19, 1054, they again offered presents to the Liao court (Liao shih 20:
1b, 2a, 4b, 7b, 8a; 70:18b, 19a, 19b; 115:3b, 4a).
On July 17, 1054, a son of Wang Hui of Koryo was by Liao
appointed Acting Grand Commandant. Wang Hui had supposedly
requested this (Liao shih 20:8b; 115:4a).^58
On Sep.1, 1055, Emperor Tao-tsung of Liao sent envoys to Koryo
to announce the death of his father Hsing-tsung on Aug.28. On Oct.20
he ordered envoys to present the late emperor’s testamentary gifts to
the Koryo court, and on Dec.1 envoys from Koryo attended Hsing-
tsung’s burial (Liao shih 21:1b, 2a; 115:4a).
On July 31, 1056, and Dec.26, 1057, Koryo envoys to the Liao
court offered gifts (Liao shih 21:3b, 5a, 115:4a).
In the spring of 1058, Liao sent envoys to Koryo to announce the
death of the Grand Empress Dowager, widow of Sheng-tsung, on
Jan.24. On May 28, envoys from Koryo attended her burial (Liao
shih 21:5b; 115:4a).
In 1061, 1062, 1063, and 1064, Koryo envoys to the Liao court
offered gifts (Liao shih 115:4a).
In 1070, a mission of 110 men from Wang Hui of Koryo was
received at the Sung court. Shen-tsung ordered that the protocol

1031 for 43 years. 39 is the correct figure. Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 325:52a merely states
that there was a disruption.

(^57) According to Liao shih, it was Wang Ch’in who died. That is again a garbled
account. Wang Ch’in died in 1034 and was succeeded by Hsiang (Chongjong). It
was Wang Hsiang who died in 1046 and was succeeded by Wang Hui.
The ascension of Wang Hui is recorded in Sung shih. The Sung had learned
about this either second-hand or directly from Koryo. In the latter case, the hiatus
in diplomatic relations would have been briefer.
(^58) 115:4a dates the appointment in the 4th month (May/June).
