The high point was during the reign of Emperor Hsüan-tsung (712-
756). Then follows the decline which is characteristic for the end of
the T’ang dynasty and the revival during the Five Dynasties.
Very little is known about the goods brought by the Black River
Mo-ho, gold, silver, textiles, cow bezoar, human hair, and ginseng being
presented by them and Shih-wei tribes in 748, and horses in 931.

The Shih-wei

The Shih-wei were linguistically related to the Khitan and inhabited
the area of northwestern Manchuria. They consisted of several tribes
which usually in the sources are collectively called the Shih-wei and
rarely are distinguished from each other by prefixes.
On Feb.11, 593, and June 27, 610, Shih-wei envoys to the Sui court
offered regional objects (Sui shu 2:8b; 3:15b).
In 625, Shih-wei envoys to the T’ang court offered gifts (T’ang
hui-yao 96:8b).
In 629, Shih-wei envoys presented leopard and sable furs (Chiu
T’ang shu 199B:9b; Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5023).
In the 7th month (Aug./Sep.) of 630, Shih-wei envoys offered
regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5023).
In the 11th month (Nov./Dec.) of 631, Shih-wei envoys offered
sable furs (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 347:27a).
In the 11th month (Dec./Jan., 633) of the Chinese year 632, Shih-
wei offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
