Missions were most frequent from 707 to 846, with 747 to 766 as
the lowest point. This was the time of An Lu-shan’s rebellion and its
aftermath and also of the deepest Tibetan inroads into China. Then
followed the period of chaos in Tibet, with, however, increased tribal
missions to the Five Dynasties and early Sung. The statistics for the
11th century may be incomplete. In addition, 12 missions from the
Tibetans to the Liao are recorded for 953 to 1104.
