On July 13, 794,^42 Te-tsung dispatched the Gentleman-of-the-Pal-
ace Yüan Tzu to recognize Yi-mou-hsün as king of Nan-chao. He
presented him with a golden seal engraved with silver, inscribed “Seal
of Nan-chao, invested during chen-yüan”.^43 The king gave a banquet,
during which he showed the envoy two silver plates which had been
presented by Emperor Hsüan-tsung (r.712-756). He also pointed at
an old flutist and a singing girl and said that of the musicians from
Kucha, whom Hsüan-tsung had presented, only these two were still
alive (Chiu T’ang shu 197:9a; Tzu-chih t’ung-chien pp.7561-7562; Wen-
hsien t’ung-k’ao 329:71a).
When the Chinese envoy returned to Ch’ang-an, Yi-mou-hsün
attached a Chancellor to the mission, who in the 3rd month (Mar./Apr.)
of 795 presented 100 Tibetan prisoners of war and regional objects
to the T’ang court. He was appointed Supervisor of the Household
of the Heir-apparent and Concurrent Palace Assistant Secretary and
was given letters to Yi-mou-hsün, his heir, and others. A younger
brother of Yi-mou-hsün, who in the previous year had led a mission
to Ch’ang-an, started back to Nan-chao in 795, probably together with
the Chancellor. He died en route. Te-tsung posthumously entitled him
Regular Cavalier Attendant of the Right (Chiu T’ang shu 197:9a-9b;
Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 329:71a).
In the 9th month (Oct./Nov.) of 795, envoys from Nan-chao pre-
sented 60 horses (Chiu T’ang shu 197:9b; Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5032).
In the 12th month (January 797) of the Chinese year 796, envoys
from Nan-chao offered gifts (Chiu T’ang shu 13:13b; Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei
p.5032).
On Feb.3, 799, a General-in-chief sent by Yi-mou-hsün arrived
at the T’ang court to congratulate on the New Year’s Day of Feb.10

In the 1st month (Jan./Feb.) of 800, musicians and dancers presented
by Nan-chao performed a sacred musical dance play for Te-tsung in
front of the Hall of Unicorn Virtue (Chiu T’ang shu 13:17b).
