In the 10th month (Nov./Dec.) of 812,^47 Nan-chao envoys offered
presents (Chiu T’ang shu 197:9b).
In the 11th month(Dec./Jan., 816) of the Chinese year 815, 29
Nan-chao envoys offered gifts (Chiu T’ang shu15:9b;T’ang hui-yao 99:
6b;Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5033).
On May 7, 816, Hsien-tsung dispatched a Military Commissioner to
Nan-chao to announce the death of his mother, the Empress Dowager
(widow of Shun-tsung), on Apr.5 (Chiu T’ang shu 15:10a).
In 816, Ch’üan-lung-sheng was murdered and succeeded by his
younger brother Ch’üan-li.^48 Nan-chao envoys requested recognition of
their new king. In the 5th month (May/June), Hsien-tsung suspended
the court for three days. He sent the Junior Inspector of the Privy
Treasurer with a Grandee Admonisher of the Left as his deputy to
condole and sacrifice and to recognize Ch’üan-li (Chiu T’ang shu 197:
9b;Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 329:71b).
In the 12th month (Dec./Jan.817) of the Chinese year 816, Nan-
chao envoys offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5033).
In the 12th month (Jan./Feb., 818) of the Chinese year 817, Nan-
chao envoys offered presents (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5033).
In the 4th month (May/June) of 818, Nan-chao envoys presented
slaves and sheep (Chiu T’ang shu 15:16a; T’ang hui-yao 99:6b).
In the 8th month (Sep./Oct.) of 818, the T’ang court ordered that
missions from Nan-chao were not to exceed 30 envoys. No more
than 5 envoys were to be appointed to nominal offices (T’ang hui-yao
97:12b).
In 820, Nan-chao envoys offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5033).
In 823, the king of Nan-chao was presented with a Chinese seal
(Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 329:71b).
In the 7th month (Aug./Sep.) of 823, Nan-chao envoys informed
the T’ang court that Ch’üan-li had died and had been succeeded
by his younger brother Feng-yu. Emperor Mu-tsung sent the Junior
Governor of the Capital to recognize Feng-yu (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5033;
Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p. 7827; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 329:71b).
In the 9th month (Oct./Nov.) of 823, envoys of the king of Nan-
chao were received at the T’ang court (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5033).^49
