In the 11th month (Dec./Jan., 815 of the Chinese year 814, a Uighur
mission of 37 men was received at the T’ang court (Tse-fu yüan-kuei
pp.5032-5033).
In the 1st month (Feb./Mar.) of 816, Uighur envoys offered gifts.
They were presented with brocade and silver vessels, each in accor-
dance with his rank. In the 2nd month (Mar./Apr.),^85 they presented
nine camels and 80 horses. In the winter, they offered gifts (Chiu T’ang
shu 15:11b; T’ang hui-yao 98:8a, 8b; Tse-fu yüan-kuei p.5033).
In the 1st month (Jan./Feb.) of 817, the Uighurs again proposed a
marriage. On Feb.20, a banquet was given for eight departing Uighur
Manichaeans, who were entrusted with the answer that a marriage
was not possible (Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.7730).^86
In 818, the Uighurs offered gifts (Chiu T’ang shu 15:16a).
Shortly before Emperor Hsien-tsung’s death on Feb.14, 820, a
Uighur envoy not only requested but demanded a marriage. The
emperor agreed. His son Mu-tsung, who ascended the throne on
Feb.20, chose a younger sister, the Senior Princess of Yung-an, as
the bride of the qaghan. She was Hsien-tsung’s fifteenth daughter
On Apr.17, the Uighur envoy returned to his homeland (Tzu-chih
t’ung-chien p.7779).
On Apr.2, 821, it became known at the T’ang court that the
Ai-teng-li-lo-ku-mi-shih-ho-p’i-chia, Who Maintains Righteousness,
Qaghan had died. Mu-tsung suspended the court for three days and
ordered all official from rank 3 and up to go to the Ministry of the
Herald and condole (Chiu T’ang shu 16:8b; 195:11a-11b; Tzu-chih t’ung-
chien p.7789).
On May 25, 821, Mu-tsung appointed the Inspector of the Ministry
of the Privy Treasurer as Acting Regular Cavalier Attendant of the
Left and Concurrent Grandee Secretary as envoy to the Uighurs to
condole and sacrifice and to recognize the new ruler as Teng-lo-yü-lu-
mo-mi-shih-chü-chu-p’i-chia, Who Venerates Virtue, Qaghan^87 (Chiu

(^85) T’ang hui-yao 98:8a has 3rd month (April).
(^86) The estimate that the marriage would cost 5,000,000 strings of cash and the
mission of the Junior Director of the Imperial Clan of 813 are by Tzu-chih t’ung-chien
recorded for 817.
The return of the Manichaeans is by Chiu T’ang shu 195:11a dated [813], 12th
month, 2nd day. Mackerras, Uighur Empire, pp.173-174 note 252, shows convincingly
that this should be emended to yüan-ho 12th year (817), 2nd month. Feb.20 was the
first day of the 2nd month. 87
Also called Teng-lo-ku-mo-mi-shih-ho-p’i-chia Qaghan (Chiu T’ang shu 195:
11b).
