court offered 360 horses, 20 jade lumps, white cotton fabrics, yak tails,
wild horse leather, and wild camels (Chiu Wu-tai shih 138:5a; Hsin Wu-
tai shih 7:5a; Wu-tai hui-yao 28:9b; Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5035).
In the 8th month (September) of 935, envoys from the Uighur
qaghan of Kan chou to the Later T’ang court offered regional objects.
The envoys were given the titles of General of the Gentlemen, Guard
of the Staircase, and Manager of Lances (Chiu Wu-tai shih 47:8a; 138:
5a;Wu-tai hui-yao 28:9b).
On May 18, 936, Emperor T’ai-tsung of the Khitan presented
Uighur envoys with garments, each in accordance with his rank (Liao
shih 3:8b).
On Oct.30, 937, Uighurs offered gifts to the Khitan court. On
Nov.6, Uighur envoys congratulated on the birthday of the Khitan
Empress Dowager (widow of T’ai-tsu). On Nov.8, T’ai-tsung ordered
the chief envoy to report on Uighur customs (Liao shih 3:12a).
On Apr.17, 938, the Uighur qaghan of Kan chou offered to the
Later Chin court wild horses, dromedaries, jade horse trappings,
uncut gems, goral horns, white sable furs, white cotton fabrics from
An-hsi, yak tails, wild camels etc. (Hsin Wu-tai shih 8:5a; Ts’e-fu yüan-
kueip.5035).
In the 10th month (Oct./Nov.) of 938,^104 a Uighur envoy to the Later
Chin court presented 100 horses and 12 camels. He was appointed
General-in-chief. His deputy was made a General (Chiu Wu-tai shih
138:5a;Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5035).
On Mar.16, 939, envoys from the Uighur qaghan of Kan chou to the
Later Chin court offered regional objects, a jade lion, 100 fine horses,
horse trappings, cotton fabrics, white sable furs, yak tails, a horse-like
animal, and rare commodities. Emperor Kao-tsu responded by send-
ing an envoy on May 1 to recognize him as Qaghan Who Upholds
Civilization (Chiu Wu-tai shih 78:3a, 3b; 138:5a; Hsin Wu-tai shih 8:7a;
Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5035).
On May 28, 939, a Uighur shan-yü (>qaghan) requested recogni-
tion from the Khitan court (Liao shih 4:3b).
On Feb.8, 940, a knife fight broke out among the members of a
Uighur mission to the Khitan court. They were ordered to hand over
the culprits for punishment (Liao shih 4:4a).
In the 1st month (Feb./Mar.) of 940, the Uighur envoys to the
