T’ai-tsung died on July 10, 649. At his order, the features of Fan
T’ou-li were carved in stone and placed at his tomb (Chiu T’ang shu
197:1b).
In Lin-yi, discontent with the rule of Fan T’ou-li’s daughter led to
her removal. The powers that be reminded themselves of a certain
Chu-ko Ti. His father had married a paternal aunt of Fan T’ou-li
but had subsequently been killed by him. Chu-ko Ti had fled to the
neighbouring Chen-la State and had remained there. A high digni-
tary was now sent from Lin-yi to invite him to return and ascend the
throne. He did this in early 653. On May 9 of that year, a mission
from Chu-ko Ti to the T’ang court presented regional objects and a
tame elephant (Chiu T’ang shu 4:4b; Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6282; Wen-
hsien t’ung-k’ao 331:11a).
In the 5th month (May/June) of 654, the Lin-yi State presented a
tame elephant, in the 2nd month (May/June) of 657 gifts, in the 8th
month (Sep./Oct.) of 668 regional objects, in 669 gifts, in the 3rd
month (Mar./Apr.) of 686 a tame elephant, in the 10th month of 691 a
tame elephant, in the 1st month(Jan./Feb.) of 695 a war elephant, in
the 4th month of the same year gifts, in the 6th month (July) of 699 a
tame elephant, in the 12th month (Dec./Jan., 703) of the Chinese year
702 gifts, in the 1st month of 704 gifts, in the 10th month (November)
of the same year gifts, in the 7th month (Aug./Sep.) of 706 gifts, in
the 8th month (September) of 707 a tame elephant, in the 11th month
(Dec./Jan.,710) of the Chinese year 709 a white elephant and regional
objects, in 711 regional objects, and in the 4th month (May/June) of
712 regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5026).
In the 12th month (Dec./Jan., 714) of the Chinese year 713, the king
of Lin-yi presented five elephants. Emperor Hsüan-tsung responded
with a letter and the gift of two horses (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5027).
In the 6th month (July/Aug.) of 715, envoys arrived from Lin-yi.
In the 10th month (Nov./Dec.) of 731, it presented four elephants, in
the 6th month (July/Aug.) of 734 gharu wood and amber, in the 8th
month (Aug./Sep.) of 735 a tame elephant, and in the 12th month
(Jan./Feb., 736) of that Chinese year a white elephant (T’ang hui-yao
98:12b;Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5027-5029).
In the 6th month (July) of 748, Lin-yi presented elephant tusks and
fancy cotton fabrics. In the 9th month (Oct./Nov.) of 749, envoys
from its king Lu-t’o offered 100 precious pearls, 30 catties of black
gharu wood, and a quantity of white cotton fabrics. In the 3rd month
