gifts to the Liao court (Liao shih 24:8a; 115:10a).
On Feb.17, 1087, Sung sent the Probationary Supervisor of the
Recepients of Edicts in the Bureau of Military Affairs and the Assistant
Commissioner for Fostering Propriety to recognize Ch’ien-shun as ruler
of Hsia and king of Hsi-p’ing (Sung shih 17:7b; 486:10b-11a).
In the 2nd month (Mar./Apr.) of 1087, Hsia envoys presented
camels and horses to Che-tsung’s grandmother, the Grand Empress
Dowager, and thanked for the [condolence] and sacrifices.^23 On Apr.21,
the envoys were received in audience (Sung shih 17:7b; 486:11a; Hsü
Tzu-chih t’ung-chien ch’ang-pien p.3747)
In the 7th month (August), Hsia forces attacked Sung fortifications
and then withdrew (Sung shih 486:11a).
On Sep.13, 1087, the Three Departments and the Bureau of Military
Affairs reported to Che-tsung that the Hsia State had not congratulated
on the birthday of his grandmother, the Grand Empress Dowager^24
(Hsü Tzu-chih t’ung-chien ch’ang-pien p.3822).
In the 3rd month (Mar./Apr.) of 1088, Hsia attacked a Sung stock-
ade (Sung shih 486:11a).
On Aug.1, 1088, Tao-tsung of Liao sent envoys to recognize Ch’ien-
shun as king of Hsia (Liao shih 25:2b; 115:10a).
On Feb.25, 1089, Sung and Hsia made peace (Sung shih 17:12a).
On Mar.28, 1089, Hsia envoys to the Sung court thanked for the
recognition of their ruler (Sung shih 17:12a; 486:11a).^25
In the summer of 1089, Hsia envoys to the Sung court offered gifts
(Sung shih 17:12b). Subsequently, Hsia envoys thanked the Liao court
for the recognition of Ch’ien-shun (Liao shih 25:3a; 115:10a).^26
In the 6th month (July/Aug.) of 1089, the Hsia State returned some
of the Chinese it had seized and received in exchange four stockades.
Yet the border remained fluid. In the same 6th month, Sung sent
the Commissioner for Fostering Propriety to present ritual objects
and winter garments on the birthday of Ch’ien-shun (Sung shih 486:
11a-11b).
