aged 67, and was succeeded by Chang-tsung. On Jan.31, the new
emperor sent the Grand Judge and others to announce Shih-tsung’s
death in Hsia (Chin shih 8:24a; 9:2b).
On Apr.10, 1189, Hsia envoys condoled at the Chin court. On
Apr.26, they sacrificed. In the 5th month (May/June), they congratu-
lated Chang-tsung on his enthronement (Chin shih 9:3a).
In the 6th month (July/Aug.) of 1189, the high officials of Chin sent
envoys to Hsia to announce that Chang-tsung’s birthday would be
celebrated on the 1st day of the 9th month. On Oct.10, Hsia envoys
arrived at the Chin court to congratulate on the birthday of Chang-
tsung. Oct.12 was the imperial birthday, but because of the mourning
for Shih-tsung the court was suspended (Chin shih 9:4b, 5a).
On Oct.22, 1189, Chang-tsung appointed the Commandant of the
Guards of the Lung-ch’ing Palace as envoy to congratulate the Hsia
ruler on his birthday (Chin shih 9:5b).
On Feb.5. 1190, Hsia envoys arrived at the Chin court to con-
gratulate on the New Year’s Day. Feb.7 was the New Year’s Day,
but because of the mourning for Shih-tsung the court was suspended
(Chin shih 9:7a).
On June 7, 1190, Chang-tsung appointed the Commissioner of the
Falcon Cage as envoy to take gifts to Hsia (Chin shih 9:8b).
On Sep.28, 1190, Hsia envoys arrived at the Chin court to con-
gratulate on the birthday of Chang-tsung. Oct.1 was the imperial
birthday, but because of the mourning for Shih-tsung the court was
suspended (Chin shih 9:9b).
On Oct.8, 1190, Chang-tsung appointed the Assistant Commander-
in-chief of the Army of the Martial Guards as envoy to congratulate
the Hsia ruler on his birthday (Chin shih 9:9b).
On Jan.24, 1191, Hsia envoys arrived at the Chin court to con-
gratulate on the New Year’s Day. Jan 27 was the New Year’s Day,
but because of the mourning for Shih-tsung the court was suspended
(Chin shih 9:10b).
On Feb.7, 1191, Chang-tsung’s mother, the Empress Dowager of
Chin, died. On Feb.12, he sent the Assistant Commander-in-chief
and others to announce the death in Hsia. On Apr.4 and Apr.14,
Hsia envoys condoled and sacrificed at the Chin court (Chin shih 9:
11a, 11b).
On Sep.19, 1191, Hsia envoys arrived at the Chin court to con-
gratulate on the birthday of Chang-tsung. Sep.21 was the birthday,
