On Feb.7, 1081, Liao envoys arrived at the Sung court to congratu-
late on the New Year’s Day of Feb.12 (Sung shih 16:3a;Hsü Tzu-chih
t’ung-chien ch’ang-pien p.2906).
On May 17, 1081, Liao envoys arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the birthday of Shen-tsung^184 (Sung shih 16:3b).
On Jan.27, 1082, Liao envoys arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the New Year’s Day of Feb.1 (Sung shih 16:6a).
On May 6, 1082, Liao envoys arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the birthday of Shen-tsung^185 (Sung shih 16:6b-7a).
On Sep.17, 1082, Shen-tsung sent envoys to the Liao court to
congratulate on the birthday of Tao-tsung and on the New Year’s
Day of Jan.21, 1083 (Sung shih 16:8a).
On Jan.16, 1083, Liao envoys arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the New Year’s Day of Jan.21 (Sung shih 16:9a).
On Apr.25, 1083, Liao envoys arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the birthday of Shen-tsung^186 (Sung shih 16:10a).
On Sep.26, 1083, Shen-tsung sent envoys to the Liao court to
congratulate on the birthday of Tao-tsung and on the New Year’s
Day of Feb.9, 1084 (Sung shih 16:11a).
On May 13, 1084, Liao envoys arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the birthday of Shen-tsung^187 (Sung shih 16:12a).
On Sep.16, 1084, Shen-tsung sent envoys to the Liao court to
congratulate on the birthday of Tao-tsung and on the New Year’s
Day of Jan.29, 1085 (Sung shih 16:12b).
On Jan.24, 1085, Liao envoys arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the New Year’s Day of Jan.29 (Sung shih 16:13a).
Emperor Shen-tsung died on Apr.1, 1085, aged 38, and was suc-
ceeded by his sixth son. This was Emperor Che-tsung. On May 14th,
he sent envoys to Liao to announce the death of his father and his
own enthronement. These were received at the Liao court on May
18 (Sung shih 16:13b; 17:2b; Liao shih 24:6a).
In the 6th month (June/July) of 1085, Tao-tsung sent envoys to
the Sung court to condole and sacrifice. They performed that task on
