After the middle of the 7th century, relations between the Khitan and
the T’ang cooled, culminating in the war of 696-697. They there-
after improved until after the middle of the 9th century, when they
again lapsed. With the Five Dynasties, relations once more warmed,
reaching the highest intensity with the Later T’ang (923-936) and
especially the Later Chin (936-946). Even though the Later Chou
and Sung were at war with the Khitan from 951 to 1005, missions
kept coming. Relations became regular after 1005 and settled into
diplomatic routine.
