3a;Chin shih 9:3a).
On Apr.15, 1189, Chin envoys to the Southern Sung court presented
Shih-tsung’s testamentary gifts (Sung shih 36:3b).
On May 5, 1189, Chin envoys to the Southern Sung court an -
nounced the enthronement of Chang-tsung (Sung shih 36:4a).
In the 5th month (May/June) of 1189, Chang-tsung sent the Com-
missioner for Bandit-suppression of the Northeastern Circuit and other
envoys to the Sung court to congratulate on the enthronement of
Kuang-tsung (Chin shih 9:3b).
On July 6, 1189, Southern Sung envoys to the Chin court congratu-
lated on the enthronement of Chang-tsung (Chin shih 9:3b).^59
In the 6th month (July/Aug.) of 1189, the high officials of Chin
informed Southern Sung that the birthday of Chang-tsung would be
celebrated on the 1st day of the 9th month (Chin shih 9:4b).
On Oct.10, 1189, Southern Sung envoys arrived at the Chin court
to congratulate on the birthday of Chang-tsung. They had received
their orders on Sep.2. The birthday fell on Oct.12, but because of
the mourning for Shih-tsung the court was suspended, and the envoys
were not received (Sung shih 36:5a; Chin shih 9:5a).
On Oct.17, 1189, a Master of Writing of the Ministry of Punishments
and other Chin envoys to the Southern Sung court congratulated on
the birthday of Kuang-tsung.^60 They had received their orders in the
6th month (July/Aug.) (Sung shih 36:5a; Chin shih 9:5a).
On Feb.5, 1190, Southern Sung envoys arrived at the Chin court
to congratulate on the New Year’s Day of Feb.7. They had received
their orders in the 9th month (Oct./Nov.) of 1189. But because of
the mourning for Shih-tsung the court was suspended and the envoys
were not received. On the same New Year’s Day, the Commissioner
of the Court of Palace Attendants of the Right and other Chin envoys
congratulated at the Southern Sung court. They had received their
orders on Dec.14, 1189, and arrived on Feb.3, 1190 (Sung shih 36:5b;
Chin shih 9:6a, 7a).


(^59) Sung shih 36:3b records that Southern Sung sent an earlier congratulatory
mission on Mar.24. If that is correct, this would have been sent before the Southern
Sung got official news of Chang-tsung’s enthronement, and so there would have been
two missions for the same purpose.
(^60) He was born on the 4th day of the 9th month (Sung shih 36:1a), but the birthday
was celebrated on the 6th day.
