The Uighurs
In 758, Su-tsung married his second daughter, the Princess of Ning-
kuo, to the Ko-le Qaghan of the Uighurs. He died within a year.
The princess escaped being buried with him and, being childless, was
able to return to Ch’ang-an. Her first cousin, the Junior Princess of
Ning-kuo, had become a secondary wife of the Ko-le Qaghan. After
the qaghan’s death, she married his son and successor, the Teng-li
Qaghan. She died in c.791.
In 787, Te-tsung agreed that his eighth daughter, the Princess of
Hsien-an, marry the Ho-ku-to-lu-p’i-chia Qaghan of the Uighurs and
sent her portrait to the Uighur court. The marriage was performed
in 789, but the qaghan died within the year. The princess married
her husband’s son and successor, the Ai-teng-li-lo-ku-mo-mi-shih-p’i-
chia, Who Is Loyal and Upright, Qaghan. When he was killed in
c.790, she married his son and successor A-ch’o. When he died in
c.795, she married the Ai-t’eng-li-lo-yü-lu-mo-mi-shih-ho-hu-lu-p’i-
chia, Who Cherishes Trustworthiness, Qaghan. He was no relation.
She died in c.808.
In 813, the Uighurs requested a marriage. Hsien-tsung had the
expenses estimated and found them too high.
In 817, the Uighurs unsuccessfully requested a marriage.
In 820, the Uighurs demanded a marriage. Hsien-tsung had to
agree but died on Feb.14. His son and successor, Mu-tsung, selected
the Senior Princess of Yung-an, who was his younger sister and the
fifteenth daughter of Hsien-tsung. However, the bridegroom died,
and his successor, the Teng-lo-yü-lu-mo-mi-shih-chü-chu-p’i-chia, Who
Venerates Virture, Qaghan, took his place. Meanwhile, the Senior
Princess of Yung-an had been replaced by the Princess of T’ai-ho, the
seventeenth daughter of Hsien-tsung. The marriage was performed
in 822. The qaghan died in 839. In 840 or 841, she was forced to
marry the Wu-chieh Qaghan of the Uighurs. In 843, she was rescued
by Chinese troops, brought to Ch’ang-an, and there retitled Senior
grand Princess of An-ting.
The Khitan
In 717, Hsüan-tsung enfeoffed a daughter’s daughter of Jui-tsung, the
Lady Yang, as Princess of Yung-lo and married her to the Khitan
chief Li Shih-huo. He died within the year.
