WELCOME ADDRESS

Dear Friends,

With great excitement, I welcome you to the latest
edition of our annual EUSA magazine, a platform to
celebrate the milestones we achieved in the past
year and to highlight the vibrant journey ahead. As
we step into 2025, our shared passion for university
sports continues to bring us closer, inspiring
camaraderie, resilience, and excellence across
Europe.

The past year was nothing short of extraordinary.
The European Universities Games 2024 in
Debrecen-Miskolc, Hungary, set a new benchmark
with its unforgettable blend of sportsmanship and
cultural exchange. Over 4736 participants from 36
countries, representing 414 universities, showcased
their skills across a variety of sports disciplines.
From thrilling matches to transformative educational
workshops, the Games left an indelible mark on all
who participated. I extend my heartfelt thanks to
the Hungarian University Sports Association and
the entire organizing team for their dedication and
exceptional efforts.

The year also brought historic milestones for EUSA,
showing our growth and enduring legacy. I am very
proud that we reached the incredible achievement
of welcoming our 100th associated member. During
the EUSA Executive Committee meeting in Aveiro,
Portugal, the University of Lisbon was approved
as our 100th Associated Member, with three
more universities joining shortly thereafter. This
accomplishment is a testament to the appeal and
impact of our initiatives, which continue to resonate
with universities across Europe.

2024 was also a year of celebration as EUSA
marked its 25th anniversary. The occasion was
commemorated in the heart of Vienna, the city
where it all began in 1999, with a remarkable Gala
dinner at the Palais Liechtenstein. Representatives,
partners and friends gathered to honor our journey
of collaboration, dedication, and excellence. The
evening was filled with cultural performances,
awards for outstanding contributions, and
reflections on the partnerships that have shaped
EUSA’s success over the past quarter-century.

This year we continued to ensure that all our
partners get the help they need to participate in our
events and to integrate them in our EUSA Family.
Especially with athletes coming from rather difficult

backgrounds we see the resilience and strength
that sports can nurture. I am always deeply moved
by the solidarity shown by our community and
partners, and I thank everyone who contributed to
making this possible.

Beyond competitions, EUSA remains committed
to innovation and growth through education
and partnerships. In 2024, the EUSA Institute in
Ljubljana successfully led multiple EU-funded
projects, including DiscoverU, YouMind and
Fit4Green focusing on dual career support for
athletes, mental health initiatives for young
sportspeople and sustainability in sports. This year,
we’re thrilled to expand these initiatives, reaffirming
our commitment to a holistic and sustainable
approach to sports and education.

Looking ahead, I invite all of you to join us for the
2025 European Universities Championships and to
prepare for the European Universities Games 2026
in Salerno, Italy. These events promise to be even
more inspiring as we integrate new formats and
opportunities for students and universities.

As always, our achievements are the result of
collective efforts. My sincere gratitude goes to
our Member Federations, Organizing Committees,
volunteers, partners, and the EUSA staff for their
dedication and enthusiasm. I also thank FISU
and the European Commission for their ongoing
support, which enables us to expand our impact
year after year.

Together, we are building more than competitions;
we are nurturing a movement that fosters unity,
excellence, and innovation through university
sports. I look forward to celebrating another year
of achievements with you, and I warmly encourage
you to stay involved, stay inspired, and stay
connected.

Let’s make 2025 another landmark year for
university sports!
