Even though I was not in the mood for cycling, the ride remained
pleasant, offering beautiful views of the surrounding woods and the
canal.

Rome was far more extensive and revealed a considerably longer
history than the other settlements along the canal. While exploring
the area, I learned that Rome was an ancient portage path until the
Europeans arrived. This ancient trade route joined the Great Lakes
and Canada via the Mohawk River to the Hudson River and the
Atlantic Ocean. I then realised the Erie Canal wasn’t a new route, but
the areas’ waterways had existed for eons.
