About This Bloh
Welcome to an adventure-filled journey through my second visit to the USA, a thrillingride from the stunning landscapes of Seattle to the vibrant streets of Boston! There
are countless routes to explore, and while the path I chose is just one of many, I
invite you to join me in reliving the experience. If you're thinking of using this book as
your cycling guide, here are a few important nuggets of wisdom to keep in mind:
The Distances
Now, let’s talk about the distances. While the daily journeys I share might not
represent the shortest routes, they are my authentic odometer readings. Sometimes,
the scenic detour is simply irresistible, and those extra kilometres lead to
unforgettable moments!
Time of Year and Date
My adventure unfolded between June and October 2014, and let’s just say, a lot can
change in nearly a decade! New developments, improved roads, or the occasional
disappearing diner might surprise you. Those hills I described? They may have feltlike mountains at the time, but every uphill struggle added to the thrill of the ride.
Insurance
Before you set off, don’t forget the importance of travel insurance. It’s your safety netfor theft, loss, and medical emergencies. While cycling isn’t typically classified as a
“dangerous activity,” always read the fine print to ensure you’re fully covered for your
journey.
Clothing
Comfort is key on long rides! Invest in high-quality, padded cycling shorts to keep you
comfy on the saddle. I prefer the freedom of cycling in sandals, but any comfortable
shoes will do. Keep in mind the extremes North America’s summers and winters; be
sure to pack accordingly! Don’t forget essentials like insect repellent and anti-chafe
cream for those long days on the road, and of course, a good cycling helmet for
safety.
The Bicycle
When it comes to choosing a bike, comfort is king. My trusty mountain bike features a
Merida frame, Shimano Deore components, Alex wheel rims, and reliable Schwalbe
tyres. Panniers are essential for carrying your gear, and I recommend the world-renowned Ortlieb panniers for their durability. Make sure you know how to fix a
punctured tube—trust me, it’ll save you a lot of heartache on the road! For
navigation, a phone holder on your handlebars is a lifesaver; I personally use Organic
Maps or Google Maps to guide my way. Don't forget a handy handlebar bag for your
camera and other daily essentials!
Recommended Further Reading
If you're looking to expand your adventure knowledge, I highly recommend picking up
a copy of Lonely Planet. The e-book version is not only more affordable but also a
fantastic portable resource to help shape your journey.
So gear up, and join me in discovering the thrills of cycling across the USA! Who
knows what memorable experiences await on the open road?
