The next day was a relaxed (albeit slow) walk featuring spectacular
vistas of Muztagh Tower, Gasherbrum 4 and, finally, K2. Even if
exhausted, I believe I wore a permanent smile and couldn’t believe I
was there.

The day was bright and sunny and K2 (the second-highest peak on
Earth after Everest) was cloudless and rose 3,600m straight from the
Godwin Austin Glacier. A sight that gave me goosebumps that weren’t
due to the cold.

The camp was upon the glacier, and one could hear the ice constantly
cracking in your tent. Due to the cold, I’d been sleeping and walking
in the same clothes for days. Luckily, everybody else did the same.

Concordia – 5300 asl
Following breakfast, a walk in the company of Ali, the guide, led to
Gasherbrum base camp and Gondogoro La over steep, slippery ice.
The walk was a slow and exhausting affair. I felt nauseous on our
return to Concordia, most likely due to the altitude. Once again, the
temperature plummeted as soon as the sun set, and one could do
little else but curl up in your sleeping bag.
