attended by theCentral Intelligence Agency’s chief of station in
London and his equivalent from Australia and New Zealand.
The chairs of the JIC have been Ralph Stevenson (1936 –39),Vic-

William Hayter (1948–49), Patrick Reilly(1950–53), Patrick
Dean(1953–60), Hugh Stevenson (1960–63), Bernard Burrows

JOINT SECURITY CONTROL (JSC).An Anglo-American liaison
committee established in 1943 byJohn Bevanand Major General
Sir Kenneth Strongto supervise the management ofdouble agents
run byBritish Security Coordinationand theFederal Bureau of
Investigationin the Western Hemisphere and to authorize the release
of information to the enemy. TheSecret Intelligence Service(SIS)
interpreted the agreement as a means by which the Americans could
be included in the preparation ofdeception, whereas the Americans
regarded it as the right of veto over any sensitive item that was too
risky to pass on. In 1944 the dispute focused onlodge, an SIS dou-
ble agent based on Montevideo, Uruguay, who had been asked by the
Abwehrto supply shipping information.


JOINT SERVICES GROUP (JSG).The specialist military intelli-
gence unit assigned to collect covert intelligence in Northern Ireland,
in succession to theForce Research Unit. The JSG is staffed by
personnel drawn from all the armed forces and deployed in the prov-
ince to recruit and run agents within the loyalist and republican para-
militaries.
