JUNIOR. MI5code name for Hans Ruser, anAbwehrdefector who
was exfiltrated from Madrid in November 1943; hisSecret Intelli-
gence Service(SIS) code name wasarthur. The son of the commo-
dore of the Hamburg-Amerika Line, Ruser’s Abwehr cover was that
of a journalist. He handledcelerywhen he visited Lisbon in Febru-
ary 1941 and declared himself to be an anti-Nazi. A year later his
offer todefectwas rejected by SIS for fear of compromisingtricy-
cle, but afterartist’s arrest, it was decided to bring him to London.
Through a miscommunication, Ruser was briefly held atCamp 020
before he was released.

KEELER, CHRISTINE.One of several beautiful girls escorted to so-
ciety parties in London in the early 1960s by Stephen Ward, Chris-
tine Keeler was a dancer at a West End nightclub when she was
introduced toJohn Profumo, the secretary of state for war, at Clive-
den, the country home ofLord Astorat the end of July 1961. They
enjoyed a brief affair andMI5sought to use both in ahoneytrap
operation aimed atEugene Ivanov, the Soviet assistant naval atta-
che ́. Alarmed at MI5’s suggestion, Profumo broke off his relation-
ship with Keeler in early August 1961 and later denied it first in a
libel action and then in March 1963 in the House of Commons.
Caught in a lie, Profumo resigned in June 1963, but Keeler continued
to revel in her notoriety, writing two autobiographies,Scandal!
(1989) andThe Truth at Last(2001).
KEITH, KENNETH.Born in 1916 and educated at Rugby, Kenneth
Keith trained as an accountant and joined the Welsh Guards in 1939.
He was transferred toSpecial Operations Executivein North Africa
and subsequently was appointed assistant toKenneth Strongas
General Eisenhower’s intelligence chief at theSupreme Headquar-
ters Allied Expeditionary Force. Keith followed Strong to the Polit-
ical Intelligence Department of the Foreign Office in 1946 and later
became one of the most successful industrialists of his generation,
being elevated to the House of Lords in 1980.
