BACKHAND. D Divisioncode name for Mohammed Zahirudden, a
triple agentand former Indian Army officer cashiered in 1940 for
nationalist agitation. Zahirudden underwent a change of heart and
was dropped intoBurmain February 1944 with the intention of
being run as adouble agentby theJapanese. He was indeed ac-
cepted by the enemy but was assigned to making propaganda broad-
casts, into which he attempted to insert messages to his British
handlers. The Japanese were suspicious of him, and he was impris-
oned in a camp from which he was liberated when Rangoon fell in
1945.


BAD NENNDORF.The headquarters of theCombined Services De-
tailed Interrogation Centrein the British zone of occupation in
Germany, commanded by ColonelR. W. G. Stephens. After the war,
Stephens was accused by his deputy, Major Short, of having mal-
treated prisoners and was court-martialed but acquitted.
