Jefferson Adams is the Adda B. Bozeman Professor of History and
International Relations at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New
York. He received his B.A. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in
modern European history from Harvard University. The recipient of nu-
merous fellowships and awards, he also taught at New York University
and was a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution,
and Peace at Stanford University.
Besides having offered many courses on intelligence history, Adams
served for over a decade as both program director and chair of the Intel-
ligence Studies Section of the International Studies Association. He is
currently the senior editor of the International Journal of Intelligence
and Counterintelligence and a member of the American Council on Ger-
many. His articles and reviews, focused especially on East German State
Security, have appeared in various print and electronic publications, and
he was a contributor to the Yearbook on International Communist Af-
fairs. His edited translation of Beyond the Wall: Memoirs of an East and
West German Spy by Werner Stiller was published in 1992.
