describedadistressingsituationinArabia.Pilgrimsattheholycities
andtheportof]iddasufferedfromnearstarvationbecausetheOtto-
mansrefusedtoshipfoodtotheHijaz,apparentlywishingtoblame
thepilgrims'conditiononBritain'scontroloftheRed Sea.Britain's
navalvesselspatrolledmuchofthelongsea-routefromSuez to Aden;
theyattackedTurkishshipping,blockadedArabianports,andseized
Arabiandhows(smallboats).Nevertheless,theBritishattemptedto
alleviatethefoodcrisis intheHijaz,shippingsuppliestothepilgrims
andlocalArabtribesthroughJidda.Inaddition,Britaindeclaredto
theArabsthatdespitethewarwithTurkey,theAllieswouldrespect
thesanctityandsafetyoftheholycities.'?"

theTurkstotribalchiefsinArabiahadfailedtoenlisttheirbacking
forthePorte.TheSharifofMecca, forexample,hadrefusedtheYoung
TurkrequestthathesupplyArabtroopsandcamelsfortheOtto-
manforces innearbyAsir. InsouthwesternArabia,thePortehadat-
temptedtoconvincetheImamYahya in Yemen, whoseassistance
