pital.WhenfortyTurksreachedthecanal'swestbankbypontoon,
theyweremassacred.BynightfalltheBritishforceshadroutedthe
invaders.TotalTurkishlossesnumberedatleastfifteenhundred;
BritishcasualtiesnearedISO.jemalPashaquicklyorderedhisremain-
ingforces toretreatintotheSinai,whichtheTurksaccomplished
withoutdifficulty.WhileJemalledmostofthecorpsbackto Pales-
tine,wheresomeoftheGermanofficersarrivedinJerusalemonII
February,Kressremainedinthedesertwithseveralbattalionsanda
squadronofcamelriders."
Theattackonthecanalfailedfor severalreasons.Althoughthe
Turksorganized,led,andconstitutedmostoftheexpedition,much
