overbothlands.NordidEnveraccepttheGermanforeignministry's
claimthatGermany'sallegedpopularityamongtheArabs in Libya
andelsewhereprovidedanadvantageforthePortebyhelpinglessen

Duringthehostilities,theBritishremainedincontactwiththe
Shaykhal-SanussithroughBedouinmessengers,whoreportedto
CairoMannesmann'sdeparturewestwardforTunisia."?Bytheend
ofDecembertheBritishmilitaryoperationsaroundMersaMatruh
hadleftmanyoftheSayyidAhmad'sforces retreatingwestwardin
confusionandhadcausedseveredamagetotheprestigeoftheirleader.
FortheBritish,itonlyremainedto clinchtheirsuccess;hadtheir
cavalryinterceptedthemainbodyoftheenemyon 25 December,as
was tohappenamonthlater,thecampaignmighthaveendedthere,
withtheSanussis'defeat.
