TheGermantroublesinthisandotherrespectsonlyincreasedwhen
thelong-plannedsecondTurkishattackontheSuezCanal,ledby
KressvonKressenstein,finallybeganonthemorningof 4 August
1916.TheassaultdidnothingtodisrupteithertheArabrevoltorthe
extensionbytheBritishoftheirdefensesintotheSinaiPeninsula.
Beginninginthespringof 1916 thenewlyformedBritishEgyptian
ExpeditionaryForce(EEF)hadadvancedacrosstheSinaiPeninsula
towardtheOttomanborder.InMarch 1916 GeneralSirArchibald
