Red Sea,hadStotzingenobtainedtouchwithGermanagents."

Further,therevolt,takeninconjunctionwiththeadvancebegun
inthespringof 1916 bythenewlyformedBritishEEFacrosstheSinai
Peninsula,providedtheYoungTurkswithamajorembarrassment.
TheTurkishforces opposingMurray'sEEFsuddenlyfoundthem-
selveshamperedby Arabdissidentsthreateningtheircommunica-
tionsandtransportationlinesfromtherear.
TherevoltandnewBritishstrategyinEgyptparticularlyhelpedto
offsetthehumiliatingdefeatoftheAnglo-IndianarmyinMesopo-
tamia.On29 April,Anglo-IndiantroopshadsurrenderedatKutal-
Amara,aftertheTurkishSixthArmy,commandedbyvonderGoltz,
rejectedanextraordinaryofferoftwomillionpoundsandfortyguns
fortheTurkstoallowthedefeatedforcetoretreatonparole.Nearly
70 percentoftheAnglo-IndianprisonerstakenatKutlaterdiedin
