includingamongtheAfghans,whowishedtofightforIslamagainst
theBritishinneighboringIndia."

HusaynibnAli,whomtheTurkshadappointedattheendof 1908
thenewsharifofMecca. IntheirdiscussionstheGerman,onthe
pretextofhisinterestinarchaeology,questionedHusaynaboutpo-
liticalrelationsintheHijaz.HusaynimpressedOppenheim,wholater
describedtheArab as "a cleverman.?"BothBritainandFranceac-
cusedOppenheimofdabblinginpan-Islamicpropaganda;Paris even
blamedhimforincitingrebellionin 1908 amongtheFrenchForeign
LegionandArabpopulationinAlgiers."
