Wutthakat | Bangkok Photo Walks, Issue 115

(Bangkok Photographers) #1

At least 53 photographers joined the BPG photo walk on September 14th, 2025 – a great turnout on such a

drizzly Sunday morning. We started off heading southwest from Wutthakat BTS station on Soi Wutthakat 24,

spending a considerable time at Wat Mai Yai Nui. Even arriving nearly 30 minutes late, Ben could still see the

back of the group from the BTS station. At the lead, Mark wound around the alleyways until he hit Wutthakat

Road but then almost immediately turned off it again, following Soi 37 southeast alongside the Ton Sai canal. At

the Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Bang Sakae we joined the rail tracks and followed them north to the Wutthakat

SRT station. There were a couple of different routes from there, but we met together at CHAN Café on Wutthakat

Road, completely overwhelming the quiet little coffee shop. While it wasn’t a part of the ‘official walk route’, a

number of photographers independently added a short after-walk to Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen with its iconic

Big Buddha right by the confluence of three canals: Phasi Charoen, Bangkok Yai and Khlong Dan.

The Wutthakat neighbourhood is part of the Bang Kho subdistrict, itself part of the Chom Thong district.

Historically, this area was the original residence of the relatives of King Rama III. Neither the temple nor the

church are especially famous or historically renowned. Compared to some parts of Bangkok we have explored,

Wutthakat is a relatively new and mundane place, which presents its own challenges and opportunities for

photographers.

The 34 photographers who submitted works for this issue of Bangkok Photo Walks certainly rose to those

challenges, capturing a broad spectrum of subjects using an interesting array of styles. Cats inevitably

captured some lenses as we met slightly more of them than usual. The extremely high percentage of friendly

folks who were willing to be photographed also means that street portraiture takes up a lot of the following

pages. Particularly popular subjects included a pair of kids fishing in the khlong (spread on page 46) and an

old gent reading his Sunday newpaper by the railway track (page 92).

With so many photographers and contributors this month, we got a bumper crop of Photographs of

Photographers. So many, in fact, that we were able to add an extra spread. Even with eight pages of space

available, a couple of those are still quite tightly packed. See for yourself (and, we hope, see yourself on the

page, too) from page 142.

Have fun,

Mark, Chutima, and Ben.
