score. Here is what the scores mean. One thing to keep in mind:
These ranges are simple comparisons to the general population.
Don’t get too worried if your numbers are low or high. Think of the
score as a way to understand the relative nature of sensation-
seeking. There are no right or wrong scores or best way to be.

avoiding sensations.
Let’s take a look at the overall score first. Overall scores on
the BSSS will range from 8–40.

  • If you scored between 8 and 16, you are a low sensation-
seeker. You are more likely a chill-seeker than a thrill-
    seeker.

  • A score from 16–28 is average. An average sensation-
seeker may enjoy some new things but doesn’t want to
    get too stimulated.

  • Anything over 28 means you are a high sensation-seeker.

  • You are more likely to feel a need for new experiences or
stimulation. You may also find yourself easily bored.

But the total score doesn’t tell the whole story. Your score on each
of the four components will explain thetypeof sensation-seeker
you are.

Thrill- and Adventure-Seeking

  • Thrill- and adventure-seeking is the desire to engage in
activities involving some physical danger or risks.

  • For thrill- and adventure-seeking, a score under 4 means
    you enjoy calmer activities.

  • Between 4–7 means you like activities that get your blood
    pumping.

  • Anything over 7 means you are drawn to the most excit-
    ing experiences.

Experience-Seeking

  • Experience-Seeking is the quest for sensations of the
    mind and the senses.

  • Experience-Seeking Scores under 4 mean you are more
    comfortable with familiar experiences.

  • Between 4 and 7 means you like balance with experi-
ences of the mind and of the senses.
