024 Cycle Touring Thailand (1)

(Leana) #1

(^18) Chaiya – Au Leuk – 170 km

With determination, we pushed forward; our heads bent low as we
pedalled along the winding path. Just as the last rays of sunlight
surrendered to the approaching darkness, we finally rolled into Ao
Leuk, exhausted.
Au Leuk – Phuket – 140 km

The final stretch of our journey to Phuket was nothing short of
breathtaking. As we rode along, the scenery unfolded like a beautiful
postcard, culminating at the Sarasin Bridge—a structure that has
bridged the gap between mainland and island since 1951. At just

meters long, this bridge carries a weighty history; it was here in

that two young lovers, thwarted by the girl's father, chose a tragic
fate and leapt into the waters below. Their heartbreaking story
transcended time, inspiring a film that immortalises their passionate
love.

After crossing this poignant landmark, we continued for another forty
kilometres, our spirits high as we finally slipped into Phuket town. A
quick glance at the map revealed a minor dilemma: Rossouw and
Dawn had made their way to Patong Beach, situated on the island's
opposite side. Fatigue washed over me, and I decided it would be
wiser to take a breather and tackle the last twenty kilometres in the
morning. Sometimes, it’s not just about reaching the destination; it’s
about savouring the journey along the way.
Phuket – Patong Beach - 21 km

Despite the beach being just a short distance away, the journey
involved a vigorous climb up a steep hill that felt like a workout in
itself.
