024 Cycle Touring Thailand (1)

(Leana) #1

(^22) After a minor mishap with my iPod's earphones getting caught in my
bike’s spokes, I replaced them. I also stocked up on the much-needed
toothpaste and hair conditioner. After my busy shopping spree, I had
to make yet another trip to the ATM.

Our second day brought persistent rain, forcing Rossouw and Dawn to
head back to their resort in a torrential downpour. With the rain
falling heavily, I spent the day updating my blogs and dropping off
laundry, but, disappointingly, the clothes refused to dry. On a brighter
note, I found a SIM card, to my family’s delight. However, I could
only manage to send SMSs, not receive them—ah, the quirks of
travel!
Patong Beach – Thai Muang Beach – 100 km
Our late departure was due to a lengthy wait for our laundry to be
returned. Once all was packed, we followed the west coast in a
northerly direction. The plan was to head to Ranong, where one could
do a visa run to Myanmar (Burma). We ambled past small beachy
villages, still struggling to recover from the 2004 tsunami.
Upon arrival at Thai Muang and looking for accommodation, a small,
obscure sign pointed to a lodge. A gravel path ran behind trees to
remote bungalows. We soon discovered the need for privacy as the
establishment rented rooms by the hour. Chalets thus came with an
ample supply of condoms and toothbrushes, as well as walls adorned
by appropriate pictures (no heart-shaped bed, though).
