Exploring Thailand by Bicycle: A Journey Through Land and Culture.
Welcome to my blog, where I share the unforgettable experience of my cycling
adventure through Thailand as I made my way from China to Malaysia! Grab yourhelmet and get ready for a wild ride as I navigate the roads less travelled, share tips,
and recount the challenges and joys of cycling in this beautiful country.
The Roads Less Travelled
Before you hop on your bike and hit the road, let me set the scene: I opted for a
route that, while not the fastest, was definitely the most fascinating. That's the
beauty of cycling—you get to deviate from the main path and explore hidden gemsalong the way! Just a heads-up, though—my daily distances might not always be the
shortest routes. But hey, who needs a straight line when there’s adventure waiting
around every corner?
A Glimpse of the Past
Now, it's crucial to mention that my journey took place in December 2009. Since
then, Thailand has undoubtedly evolved; roads may have been improved or fallen into
disrepair, and accommodations could have risen or faded away. But one thing's forsure: the hills I conquered felt grand and daunting at that time! If you're planning
your own adventure, just keep in mind that things might look a bit different now.
Stay Protected on Your Adventure
Before you set out, let’s talk insurance. Seriously, securing a solid travel insurancepolicy is non-negotiable. Make sure it covers loss, theft, and medical expenses—it’ll
give you peace of mind as you pedal your way through Thailand. But remember to
read the fine print; some activities, like scuba diving or trekking, might not be
included!
Dress for Success
Let’s talk about what to wear during your cycling escapade. Trust me, a pair of high-
quality, padded cycling shorts can make all the difference on long rides! And with
Thailand’s heat, lightweight, breathable clothing is essential. Don't forget those all-
important personal items, like insect repellent and anti-chafe cream, because no onewants discomfort spoiling the fun. Oh, and absolutely wear a cycling helmet—safety
first, always!
The Perfect Bike and Gear
When it comes to selecting your trusty steed, comfort is key! I rode a mountain bikewith a sturdy Merida frame, outfitted with Shimano Deore parts, Alex rims, and
reliable Schwalbe tires. For hauling my gear, Tubus racks and Ortlieb panniers were
my go-to choices—though a bit on the pricier side, they’ve proven indispensable! And
don't forget the tools: knowing how to fix a flat tire is a must. For navigation, I rely
on Organic Maps or Google Maps—having a phone holder on my handlebar makes life
so much easier. Plus, a handlebar bag is great for stashing your camera to capture allthose epic memories.
