Chapter 3 - Granite Dreams and Desert GodsAswan: Granite and Gods
In Aswan’s northern quarries, an area renowned for its stunning pink
granite, Amanda and I stumbled upon the legendary Unfinished
Obelisk, 42 meters long, cracked and abandoned. It was meant for
Karnak, perhaps commissioned by Hatshepsut herself. Just imagine if
it had been completed! Towering at a staggering 42 meters (138 feet)
and weighing around 1,200 tons, it would have been the largest
known ancient obelisk. This awe-inspiring sight would have stood
proudly against the Egyptian skyline. Standing there, gazing at the
immense stone, I couldn't help but marvel at what was achieved so
many millennia ago.
