75 Years of Excellence

A Brief History of the School

Founded in 1950, the American School of Tangier (AST) is one of the

longest-established international schools in North Africa. Originally built to

serve expatriate families in the diplomatic and business communities, AST

quickly became a sought-after institution for Moroccan families seeking an

English-language, internationally minded education. Over the decades, the

school has grown in size and reputation - serving generations of students

who have gone on to attend top universities around the world.

AST’s legacy includes contributions from iconic cultural figures such as Paul

Bowles, Yves Saint Laurent, Madison Cox, James and Marguerite McBey,

Tennessee Wiliams, and our own Joe McPhillips, whose ties to the city

helped shape the creative and intellectual environment of the school during

its early years.

Our Unique Position in Tangier

Today, AST remains the only English-rst school in Tangier, delivering a structured

American curriculum from Kindergarten through Grade 12. We are a not-for-prot,

independent school with a clear mission: to prepare students for academic success

and global citizenship.

As Tangier grows as a global-facing city, AST stands out as the school of choice for

direction today reects our roots in Tangier’s unique cultural fabric - and our
