Fermanagh. (Photo: Crown Copyright, by permission of the Controller of HMSO.) Bottom
left: Cross-slab from Dunfallandy, Perthshire. (Photo: Trustees of the National Museums of
Scotland.) Bottom right: Hilton of Cad boll. (Photo: Trustees of the National Museums of
Scotland.) Horsemen and hunting scenes appear on Pictish, Irish and a few Welsh monuments,
and along with figures provide a glimpse of native costume and dress sense - Celtic mous-
taches, tunics, cloaks and penannular brooches, and for ecclesiastics use of the tonsure. The
Hilton of Cadboll stone shows a Pictish lady riding side-saddle with her husband beside her.
The proximity of mirror and comb symbols suggests that the monument may have been
erected for her. The White Island figures which include an ecclesiastic with bell and crozier,
and a representation of King David, suggest that ambitious architectural schemes were also
undertaken. Sockets in the tops of the heads may have supported steps for a pulpit or similar
structure. Though stylized, interesting details of dress are depicted, which suggest a date
around ninth-tenth century.
