SUBSCRIBER SPOTLIGHT

http://www.writers-online.co.uk MARCH 2020^49

‘This is the first time I’ve written quite so personal a
book,’ writes subscriber Julia Thorley.
‘A Sparge Bag on the Washing Line is the result
of a diary I kept during my husband’s first year of
retirement and I never intended it to be read by
anyone else. However, a close friend said she’d be
interested in seeing it, so I gave her the first month
to look at and she said she laughed all the way
through it. Buoyed by this I showed the same extract
to the team at 3P Publishing (who had published my
previous book, Stripped-back Yoga) and they agreed it
had some merit, so I pressed on.
‘I didn’t tell my husband about the diary until
nearly nine months had passed, because I wanted
what I recorded to be accurate and done in real
time; I wrote every day. I’ve kept the tone light, but
I’m not making fun of the poor man. If anything,
I’m the one who doesn’t come out of it covered in
glory. Several people who’ve read the book have
said they’re now looking at me in a completely
different light.
‘Many of the women have said, “Yes, I’ve got one

like that at home,” while response from the
men has been “Poor Clive!” All credit to him
for letting me show what’s been going on
behind closed doors; I’m not sure I would have
been so generous had the roles been reversed.
‘I’ve published independently, but 3P
Publishing is a hybrid publisher in that, yes,
I’ve made a contribution towards the costs
of production, but I’ve received incredible
guidance and support throughout the whole
process, including advice on marketing,
which as any writer knows is the hardest part
of the job.
‘I’ve written books before, but this is the
one I’ve enjoyed the most. I’m still working
on short fiction and even some poetry, but
during the process of bringing this one to life
I’ve realised that my strength lies in humour
and narrative non-fiction. My next book will
be in similar vein, but without revealing quite
so many family secrets.’
