The Great Plague. The Story of London\'s Most Deadly Year

(Jacob Rumans) #1
Bills of Mortality for Greater London • 295

sources:London’s Dreadful Visitation;GL, MS 3604/1/1. These figures reflect the plague toll in
1665 better than the printed annual bill, which begins with December 20–27, 1664 (1 plague bur-
ial), and omits December 19–26, 1665 (152 plague burials).
note:The weekly Bill of Mortality in London was listed as being from Tuesday to Tuesday, but it
covered the seven days from Tuesday to Monday, with the second Tuesday being a day of tallying
the counts for the previous seven days.
To the official totals for the year must be added 156 burials at the Westminster pesthouse. These
are tallied in the pesthouse column of the weekly bills and the General Bill of 1665 but are inex-
plicably omitted from the tally of total burials and plague burials in both the weekly bills and the
General Bill. The General Bill’s plague burial figures for each of the 97 parishes within the walls
seem to include some incorrect numbers, since they add up to 77 more than the 9,887 given in this
bill as the year’s total of plague burials for these parishes, a sum derived by adding the 97 parishes’
plague burial totals from the 52 weekly bills. Other arithmetic or printing errors in the General Bill
are inconsequential.
