*Always test a marking tool on a scrap of fabric from your project before using.

01 | ERASABLE PENCIL
Use to trace around
templates on the back side of
fabrics.

02 | WATER-SOLUBLE PEN*
Mark dots and seam lines
on fabric. The marks can be
removed with water.

03 | THREAD SNIPS
Clip threads easily with a
small pair of scissors.

04 | THIMBLE
Use a protective finger cover
to relieve pressure when
pushing a needle through
fabric layers.

05 | APPLIQUÉ PINS
Hold pieces in place with
small pins that won’t obstruct
your work.

06 | THREAD
Choose the thread type you
prefer in colors that match
your fabrics in order to help
hide stitches.

07 | BETWEEN NEEDLES
Hand-piece with a needle
that has a short, strong shaft
and a small eye.

08 | STRAW OR MILLINERS
NEEDLES
Hand-piece with a needle
that has a long, narrow shaft.
It pulls easily through fabric,
leaving very small holes.

09 | THREAD
CONDITIONER
Strengthen your thread and
prevent it from tangling and
fraying.

CHOOSE PIECING METHOD
We recommend hand-piecing this
table mat because of the many set-in
seams and small pieces. Stitching by
hand from dot to dot on seam lines
also means that seam allowances
aren’t sewn down, allowing you to
choose the direction to press each unit
or round after it is completed. For more
information, see “How to Hand-Piece,”
page 28.
If you prefer to machine-piece,
stitch carefully between matching
points, sewing from dot to dot.

CUT FABRICS
Cut pieces in the following order.
Patterns are on Pattern Sheet 4.
Make templates of patterns, referring
to Make & Use Templates, page 98;

FINISHED TABLE MAT:

setting in seams. Transferring seam
lines is optional.

From beige print, cut:

From assorted medium and dark
prints, cut:
▫ 200 of Pattern B
▫ 8 each of patterns C, D, D reversed,
