IT’S SUMMER AND TIME TO
TRAVEL! I’m looking forward to
attending quilting retreats—local,
state, and national—which is one
of my favorite things to do. I have
been going to the Iowa Quilters
Guild Offi cers retreat for more than
25 years. I distinctly remember
the fi rst time I attended because I
was pregnant with my oldest son. I
hadn’t told anyone and slipped out
frequently to nap. I feel like I slept
through most of that retreat!
When I travel by car to quilting
retreats, I take four bags, below,
two for sewing machines—one
is a backup—one for fabric, and
one for clothes. Often the suitcase
containing fabric is larger than the
one containing clothes! We polled
our staff members, teachers, and
retreat hosts for their favorite tips
and suggestions for participating in
a quilting retreat. The results can
be found in “Plan Your Best Quilt
Retreat Ever,” page 17.

In this issue we off er a hand-
piecing project, Inner Circle, page 24.
Designer Kadee Porter made
the scrappy table mat. If you are
unfamiliar with hand piecing, refer
to page 26 to see the tools you need
to make this sew-on-the-go project. I
wanted to try the technique so I made
the color option, page 33.
Have you tried foundation paper
piecing? I like it because I can get
perfect points. Designer Vicki Ruebel
used the technique and a colorful
collection of solids to create a
spectacular wall quilt, Color Wheels,
page 34. The red, white, and blue
color option makes a terrifi c accent
pillow.
Are you a fan of two-color quilts
and scrappy quilts? If so, they don’t
need to be mutually exclusive. As
an example, designer Val Langue
combined a variety of blue shirtings
and white shirtings in Forever Blue,
page 54, for a scrappy two-color quilt.
Hand appliqué is featured in
Summer’s Song, page 62. Designer
Janice Joyner made two versions
of the bird-and-fl ower design. The
pillow features a neutral color palette
of cream, tan, and light brown, and
the wool tote is done in bright batiks
and wool felt.
Do you have a favorite quilt retreat
you attend? Let me know why it’s
your fav at [email protected].
